Bishop Fenwick High School freshman Todd Snyder was recognized recently by the University of Cincinnati’s Early IT program for his work this summer in the UC/INTERAlliance 2020 Early IT Career Camp and internship with Kroger’s IT department. He is a student this year in WCCC/Fenwick Instructor Jennifer Baumaster’s Mobile Computing class, a required course for all incoming 9th graders. The course uses the standards for Information Technology Fundamentals.
Warren County Career Center offers satellite programs at Bishop Fenwick High School in the areas of engineering, with instructor Hugh McPhail, and information technology, with Mrs. Baumaster, to give students access to Career Technical Education courses.
A Fenwick guidance counselor recommended he sign up for the summer opportunity with UC/INTERAlliance since he has an interest in the computer science field. Even though the camp was not in-person this year, it was still happening virtually and was attended by many high school students in the Cincinnati area.
The UC Career Camp gave participating students an introduction to coding, game design and cyber, with a different IT professional speaking to them every day. His internship with Kroger involved participation on a team about App Development. Todd learned about Java, UX design, and lots of team work skills.
Todd said he has always has been interested in computers, and his father is an IT professional so he has a strong background. His thoughts about a future career path include computer software engineer or hardware engineer. Knowing that the career paths overlap, he said he might master both topics.
The WCCC partnership with the University of Cincinnati School of Information Technology offers students the opportunity to earn college credit in high school and acceptance into the college as a sophomore after graduation, along with participation in the Early IT Career Camp and various internship experiences in area IT companies.
