Junior Welder Qualifies for World Champion Dart Competition

Gavin Nicoll, Junior Dart Champ

WCCC junior Gavin Nicoll, Centerville, has been working on skills in his Welding program, settling in to a new school and making friends. His instructor, Bob Arkill, says he is already a good welder. In his spare time, Gavin practices daily on a different skill, throwing darts, which has resulted in him winning the Junior Darts Corporation Tour Champion title. Gavin will travel to Bristol, England on Dec. 11 to represent the U.S. in the World Championship. He has also qualified for the World Cup.

Gavin says he was born into the darts competition arena. His father, and that side of the family supports and promotes the sport of darts. He started at age 4 or 5, learning from his father, and began competing when he was 12.

“When I was younger I used softip darts at first,” he said. “Then, I started using steel darts that felt good to me and now I have darts from my sponsor shot darts.”

He also placed this year in the Top 4 in the national American Dart Organization rankings. His highest score is a 180 in three darts, the highest score you can achieve with three darts.

“My prior competitions have all been smaller events. This is the biggest title I have ever won,” he said. “I am excited to be representing the U.S.”

Gavin also plays baseball in a select league, playing three positions: pitcher, first base, and outfield. Even though he is a national champion in darts and also a successful baseball player, he is planning a career in welding, not sports.

“I love welding,” he said. “I have had some experience in welding because my dad taught me about it. I have done roll-cage welding. I plan to finish high school, think about college and play more darts. But, I will pursue welding as a career. I am still looking at my options for furthering my education.”
