Cosmetology Junior Takes 2nd in Rotary Speech Contest

Macy Richards, Centerville, a junior in Cosmetology, decided to try something different when she entered the Lebanon Rotary Club Speech Contest recently. “It was out of my comfort zone,” she said. “There were a lot of people in the audience as I was speaking. I didn’t think I could do it, and afterward I didn’t think I had even placed.”

Macy took second place in the contest, and is going to get ready and compete again next year. She spoke about disaster preparedness in a 4 to 6-minute prepared speech, in which she could not use notes. “I had to practice speaking more slowly,” she said. “And I tried to say it word for word, and learned that it’s better to know the main points and speak to them.”

English teacher Brandon Welch, her coach, encouraged her to try the contest. “I am so proud of Macy,” he said. “She stepped out of her comfort zone and did so well. I told her that if she could overcome her shyness, she could win the contest. When it was announced that she took second place, she and her mom were in tears; they were so happy.”
