WCCC students from Lebanon Michael Wynkoop, senior Sports Medicine; Isabella Gliatti, junior Pre-Nursing; and Mackenzie Glancy, senior Surgical Technology; volunteered to serve on the new Lebanon Youth Chamber of Commerce, which also includes students in grades 9-12 from Lebanon High School and Lebanon Christian School. About 30 students are participating in this first year of the project, begun by Lebanon High School teacher Bunny Brooks. WCCC Workforce Development Coordinator Yvonne Kaszubowski is the advisor for WCCC students involved.
“Students today need to know what a chamber is, and how it helps you in your business and career,” Mrs. Brooks said. “We need to help them see the value in being active in their community. As we give back to our community, our career, business, and community grows, and I want them to learn that. My plan is for this to be their organization, a totally student-run chamber in which they plan the monthly meetings, enlist the speakers and plan community service projects.”
Lebanon Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Angie Smith said she is excited about working with the youth chamber. “This is a vision that Bunny Brooks developed and brought to my attention,” she said. “I loved this concept and idea for many reasons! I feel it is extremely important to have our students involved in the chamber and business groups to understand how our community works. I think it is a great opportunity to truly understand ‘real life’ experiences, and grow their community connections. I also think this is a great opportunity for each student to begin to make a ‘name’ for him/herself. I have personally watched our amazing students thrive throughout experiences like this, and I am thrilled to be able to partner with the schools to help grow our Lebanon Youth Chamber.”
The youth chamber’s first meeting began with an explanation of the purpose of a chamber and how it works, and as the chamber progresses, students will develop by-laws, and plan events and projects. WCCC Atrium Campus will host the October meeting.
